DESCRIPTION

Flayderman says around 23,000 of these revolvers were made by Starr from the late 1850s to the early 1860s. I have always found them interesting as a piece of Victorian engineering that was a step too far: the trigger pressure necessary for the double action likely to throw off one's aim and the army eventually opted for the less expensive single-action version.
This one is serial number 11579, about midway in the production run and shows deep, vivid inspector cartouches on either side of the grips, and Starr maker and patent stamps on either side of the frame below the cylinder. The wood to metal fit is tight and there are some dings and scratches to the wood, but nothing to bad and the color is excellent. The barrel has about 60 percent original blue, wearing toward the muzzle where is transitions into a plum brown. The cylinder has about 70 percent of the blue and the frame about 30 percent, strongest on the right front. The screwheads retain all their blue. The hammer shows case color. The top of the frame is brown. The mechanism works fine.
Starr finish is usually 100 percent intact or has come off in large flakes. This is not a mint gun, but the overall appearance is far more even and pleasing than you usually see in this price range.
