DESCRIPTION

Philadelphia Depot Bullseye Canteen with Leather Sling: August/September 1862.

This brown wool covered corrugated canteen with eight raised rings (not including the center dimple) matches the example shown as number 130 on p.124 of ODonnells US Army and Militia Canteens. Like that example, the pewter spout of this one is marked H.B. & Co. PHILAD. for Horstmann Brothers and Company, and is identified as being part of that companys contract of Aug. 31, 1862, for approximately 50,000 canteens. ODonnell states that the Depot also officially went over to sewn cotton and webbing straps from leather straps at about the same time (p. 113 and elsewhere,) so this is probably about the last of the leather type, using up the remaining inventory of the old pattern straps on the new type of canteen body.
The leather strap is -inch wide and has a small roller buckle backed by a triangular safe. The leather is very good and solid, with no dressing or treatment applied. It will bear the weight of the canteen, but I would not display it that way and I would be careful of bending any antique leather at too sharp and angle. One break just above a bracket has been cleverly mended with a small glue join- please see the photos. It is not very obvious. The stopper is retained by a couple of pieces string cord and is attached to the sling. The cover is typical brown wool with some dirt, dust, and brown rust stains, but no open seams or mothing.
A scarce early-war canteen with its original leather sling.
