War of 1812 US Light Dragoon Helmet
One of the very few around. All from the same source, a shipment sent east from a western depot at the beginning of the Civil War to the Schuylkill Arsenal and retained in storage for a century. The Smithsonian took a few and others made their way into private hands. The story is that a number in less than good condition were simply burned. The vast majority of loose plates for these helmets on the market today are fakes.
