Military Portfolio- The Sutlers Stationery Depot
click for an even bigger image

Civil War soldiers were known for their high rate of literacy and commercial interests were quick to take advantage of it in offering a wide variety of writing implements and supplies. Here is a scarce bit of ephemera: an advertising envelope for the "Excelsior Accommodation Military Portfolio Warrented the Best..." This contained varied sheets of writing paper and envelopes, a vest pocket memorandum, etc., all priced at 30 cents. Addresses are given at the bottom for eastern and western orders. At the bottom right is printed "Sutlers Stationery Depot." The reverse has four vignetted scenes, printed in blue like the elements on the front) and advertises "Shaver's patent eraser & burnisher, pencil sharpener etc. all neatly combined..." with the motto "multum in parvo," "much in a little."

Minor edge wear and stain lower left as shown. Small tear at top. Still, very displayable and very scarce.

Shipping $5. NY addresses add sales tax.
