click for an even bigger image

These buttons with a doubled-wire hook on the reverse were patented in 1862 and bear that patent date on the tin back. They were a commercial product intended to enable the soldier to convert his rubber blanket into a makeshift poncho by fastening through the grommets that were placed along each edge of the issue rubber blanket. The face of the button is the standard US general service eagle.
