DESCRIPTION

A beautiful Civil War Union Major's set. This just surfaced from a collection and unfortunately does not have the officer's identification, but came together according to the collector and I will not break it up. It consists of a beautiful set of double bordered embroidered bullion shoulder straps with a black velvet background and double border and major's oak leaf insignia, measuring 4 1/2 inches by 1 7/8, all showing lots of the original gilding on the bullion. The straps are the typical Civil War open back style and still retain their laces, indicating they were attached to the shoulders of the coat through small holes rather than actually being sewn to the shoulders. One of the straps also still has a piece of its original paper label on the reverse. The gauntlets are soft leather, a doeskin, buff in color and are in great condition with just some dirt and staining on the finger tips and a darker stain at the upper wrist of the right gauntlet and lower wrist of the left. The sash is a non-regulation version having flat knots at the ends rather than the rounded turksheads, but retains its original deep crimson color, and measures about 3 inches wide and 103 inches overall (8 feet 7 inches) including a 7 1/4 inch knot and tassels at each end.

This is a superb looking Civil War officer's set.
