DESCRIPTION

An impressive reunion ribbon for veterans of the Iron Brigade. The unit will need no introduction.
Measuring 15 inches long and 3 1/2 inches wide, this is a "stevengraph" ribbon woven in multiple colors, named after the inventor, J.P. Stevens. He introduced the process in 1862 and by the 1880s it had become quite a fad in the US for the production of bookmarks, etc. Not many G.A.R. ribbons were produced by this method because of the cost involved, so it is scarce type of ribbon and even more significant for the unit whose veterans it was made for. The Wisconsin Veterans' Museum has two or three examples donated by Iron Brigade veterans or their families and I know of a couple of others in private collections, but not many.
The photographs should tell the story: black silk with the brigade name woven at the top, over first corps badge and crossed flags with corps commanders' names, over a cartouche reading "Wisconsin-Indiana-Michigan." Below that are the brigade's dates of organization, its commanders, the names of its regiments on a scroll, and a list of its battles, ending with Appomattox over an American eagle with the word "Victory" superimposed on it.
The ribbon has been professionally framed and I have not taken it out of the frame, but it looks in super condition. One of these described in an article by Tom McCory has a "Stevens / Coventry" maker's label on the reverse. I don't know if it is in place on this or not, but it was apparently done by the original British company rather than one of the American companies using the process.
The frame measures 19 1/2 by 8 inches overall and the ribbon is pressure mounted on a red cloth backing.I would guess the framing was done ten to twenty years ago.
I shows several pictures of the ribbon and two of brigade commander Edward S. Bragg in his G.A.R. days wearing one of these ribbons. The last photo is from an online version of Tom McCrory's article published originally by the Civil War Veterans' Historical Association.
