Lorenz Bayonet and American Scabbard- Exc. Condition
click for an even bigger image

The Austrian Lorenz rifle was imported by both sides in the Civil War in numbers only surpassed by Enfields. This is the typical Austrian quadrangular bladed bayonet with its spiral mortised socket. This bayonet is in very good condition with a silver-gray blade that has a good edge and point and just some scattered deeper gray and brown spots. The socket is more brown from exposure to the air. The blade has been shielded in a scabbard.
The scabbard is the charactertistic US made scabbard for these imports, diamond-shaped in cross section for the four-sided bayonet and with an early to mid-war style scabbard using on two rivets on the collar of the frog around the bayonet scabbard body.
The finish is excellent on the scabbard with just minor scuffs and a few scrapes, by far better than I have seen in recent years at any show.
I show a member of the 95th Pennsylvania photographed at Centreville, Va., in 1862 carrying a Lorenz and using one of these scabbards.
