DESCRIPTION

Regulation Civil War Union Cavalry Overcoat.

The mounted enlistedmans greatcoat differed from those issued to infantry in the cut (longer cape and cuffs, double breasted, higher roll-over collar, etc.) and the button arrangement (more for the double breasted coat and the longer cape.)

This one is practically mint, virtually no mothing to the cape or body and just two small fingernail size holes in the lining that do not hit the coat itself. Full sleeve lining and body lining, which is a blue, loose-weave lining.

This is one of about 30 overcoats that came out of Chrisdies costume house in the early 1970s. Suppliers of costumes for theatre companies had long made use of army surplus as a cheap source for uniforms. In the late 1960s and early 1970s a few savvy collectors and dealers discovered them as a source and began buying their inventory of uniforms and equipment. This was the source, for example, for the large number of Model 1864 cartridge boxes that Norm Flayderman sold for many years, and for many of his cavalry and artillery shell jackets.

The right and left sleeve linings of this coat have the large Chrisdies stamp in them. In addition, the left sleeve has the original Civil War makers stamp W.B. Button / N.Y. and a size marking of two dots. The right sleeve has a rectangular Civil War inspectors stamp as well as an Arabic size 2 stamp and the two dots as well. Button had large Civil War contracts for uniforms, including cavalry and infantry trousers, artillery jackets, artillery and engineer coats, VRC jackets and overcoats, among others. Bazelon mentions contracts for 175,000 infantry greatcoats and 67,000 mounted greatcoats in 1862 and 1863.

This is a spectacular condition mounted greatcoat. I cant praise it enough, and I usually try to underplay things.
