DESCRIPTION

Regulation issue crupper for the US 1859 pattern McClellan cavalry saddle, the standard Union cavalry trooper's wartime saddle. Very nice condition. Black leather oxidized to a brown tone. Lots of original finish, just a bit of scuffing here and there. Never had any leather treatment or oil put on it. Black japanning still present on the buckles. The only fault I see is the two small leather slides are missing. Otherwise near mint. Sharp maker's mark: "STERLING & Co." I show Bazelon's entry for them. Not much is known, but they were in St. Louis and produced leather goods. Oval U.S, Ordnance Department Sub-inspector stamp just to the left of the maker's mark.
They condition does not get much better.
Shipping $9.75 insured. NY addresses add sales tax (sorry about that!)
