DESCRIPTION

Indian War US army Model 1874 clothing bag. Scarce type 2 pattern made in 1876-1877. See McChristian (Army in the West 1870-1880) page 207-208. Originally issued with the 1874 infantry brace system, these bags were worn on their own using a separate sling with a Chambers patent friction buckle and leather billets on the ends to fit the brass frame buckles attached at the top rear of the bag.
The type 1 bags had a rubberized coating on the outer flap. The type 2 did not, but retained the leather binding around the top of the bag body and use of a leather billet fastening over a Civil War style eagle button to fasten a small rectangular pocket mounted on the out side of the bag body and concealed by the outer flap. The outer flap has a pocket also. The flap is secured at the bottom to the bag body by two cloth straps with grommets that are secured with brass frame buckles on the bottom of the bag body. These brass frame buckles, like those at the top rear are attached to the bag with leather. (The type 3 dispensed with the leather to enable the bags to be better washed.)
Nice US marking on the outer flap. Watervliet Arsenal stamp legible across the inside of the flap above the pocket. Leather in excellent condition as is the canvas with just some dirt and staining here and there from being folded up with the leather.
A surprisingly had version to find. Issued to soldiers at the regimental level and also to recruits heading to post assignments.
