DESCRIPTION

Mint surplus set of fenders for the 1859 McClellan. Just minor scuffing or finish loss to the edges of the loops on one from the leather flexing because it was on the bottom. I have not tried to treat or color it, but the slight scuffing could be made invisible.
Nicely marked with a "U.S." below the upper loops and Condict maker stamp reading,"Manufactured / by / J.E. Condict & Co./ 57 White St./ New York"
Interestingly, this stamp is upside down and is superimposed over another stamp with "Newark N.J." in the bottom line. Condict did business in Newark as well, and this could be a stamp from that address, but the first line, though faint, seems to read "Geo..." so I wonder if it was supplied to Condict by a subcontractor whose marking was then blotted out by Condict when he supplied it to the government.
In any case, these are a tough bit of cavalry gear to find on the loose and this set is nice.
