DESCRIPTION

Very scarce example of the prewar or very early war 1858 pattern Union canteen. Smooth sided, bray wool cover, using a 5/8 inche wide leather strap with a small roller buckle and triangular leather safe behind it. Cover is complete, some stains from actual field use, but very good. Spout has very shallow lip. No stopper, but used one with a string. Strap is very good, but has one section about an inch long where a mouse chew thinned it to about half its width.
A very nice, scarce example. Makers switched to cloth straps early on and the leather straps have usually not survived.
Nicely personalized by a soldier with his painted initials "RS," but no name or other information survives with it to help with the identification.
A very hard example to find.
