DESCRIPTION

Civil War infantry enlistedman's belt plate- the "Oval U.S." in collector parlance. Introduced in 1839 and worn into the early 1870s. This version has "arrow" or "snake head" studs in addition to the fastening hook. The studs are behind the "S," which was originally a distinction of plates intended for dragoon belts, but which had lost its distinction by the Civil War. Nice color, a few age stains on the very edge, not noticeable. Nice curved and beveled hook, shallow lead solder fill and body bend to the plate, as there should be. This pattern is thought by some to have been made by the same Philadelphia area maker who supplied the Philadelphia Home Guard plates (see O&C plate 589,) but I know of nothing definitive yet.
Measures 2 3/16 by 3 3/8 inches. (I see no point in using the metric system here. The manufacturers were using inches, if anything, and one rumor about the recent plate books is that they used conversion tables for measurements rather than remeasuring the plates with a metric rule anyway.)
Shipping $8.95 priority mail insured. NY addresses add sales tax.
