DESCRIPTION

A very scarce early war dated saddle in great condition. 1859 pattern McClellan enlisted cavalry saddle made by the Allegheny Arsenal in 1861 and clearly so marked on the saddle shield on the pommel along with the seat size number "3".

Unspaded D-rings, quarterstraps sewn on the D-rings without rivets. Tie-down strap loops likewise sewn only. Some separations along the seams from shrinkage, but no missing rawhide except on the very top of the pommel from honest period wear and you can see the small bit of wood exposed has a sheen to it from the troopers hand as well. Some alligatoring to the finish of the straps, but they are solid. The skirts are very nice.

The only defects I see are as follows: one staple and ring are missing from the rightside forward side bar as is the nearest rivet on the quarter-strap. Second, one of the quarter-straps was torn where it wraps over the D-ring- I used a bit of glue to repair it (it could be backed and filled in, but it holds as is.) Lastly, there was a tear across one side of the stirrup strap on the opposite at one of the fastening holes. I backed this with a short piece of fabric tape and glued it. It seems to be holding fine. My last two photos show the quarter-strap and stirrup strap repairs.

With this comes a set of fenders that were on it. I removed them because they had slid down the stirrup straps breaking the stitching one side of one lower loop. I repaired this, but did not remount the fenders. There is also a leather girth that was fastened on the girth straps. I unbuckled this for ease of handling. It is a bit stiff, but not brittle. One small triangular piece is missing from the perimeter of one of the safes on one end. Otherwise it is good and seems to have been with the saddle forever.

I can supply further images to any one interested or call for details. This is a very nice saddle
by a scarce maker with a desirable date as well.
