DESCRIPTION

The 1881 pattern holsters have two holes to enable them to fasten over an 1873 Colt or a Schofield S&W. They were made in four basic patterns that differed in the size of the belt loop in an effort to fit it to the saber belt and to the cartridge belt.
The loop on this has 3 1/4 inch opening measuring from the top of the rivet to bend of the belt loop on the narrower side. This makes it, I believe, a Type 3, which was intended to fit over the belt plate and then also over an empty cartridge belt. This style was first proposed in 1884 and was produced from 1885 to 1890, when the even wider loops of the Type 4 came in (to enable it to go over a full cartridge belt.)
Details can be found in Meadows, Farrington and McChristian Vol. 2. (I use the measurements provided by McChristian vol. 2, page 77.)
This is a nice solid holster with a very visible embossed oval/US, lots of finish, toe plug in place, etc. There is a narrow, stamped "F" on the flap between two smaller and more deeply stamped "0" marks. I see what appear to be traces of other marks on the tip of the flap latch and about an inch below the US on the body of the holster. I show these with red arrow pointing them out, but I cannot read them fully. It's a very nice holster regardless.
